In the remote Rocky Mountains, lives depend on the Search & Rescue brotherhood. But in a place this far off the map, trust is hard to come by and secrets can be murder…
As a Motorcycle Club member and firefighter, Ian Walsh is used to riding the line between the good guys and the bad. He may owe the Club his life, but his heart rests with his fire station brothers…and with the girl he’s loved since they were kids, Rory Sorenson. Ian would do anything for Rory. He’d die for her. Kill for her. Defend her to his last breath-and he may just have to.
Every con in the Rockies knows Rory is the go-to girl for less-than-legal firearms, and for the past few years, she’s managed to keep the peace between dangerous factions by remaining strictly neutral. But when she defends herself against a brutal attack, Rory finds herself catapulted into the center of a Motorcycle Club war-with only Ian standing between her and a threat greater than either of them could have imagined.
Read on for my thoughts on Fan The Flames. No true spoilers, promise.
Fan The Flames picks up pretty much where Hold Your Breath left off in this continuing series. Ian is now a person of interest in the ongoing investigation of the murder of the headless dead guy. Convenient that something belonging to Ian was found around the body – especially since he knows he had nothing to do with this one. Yeah, he grew up in a MC and is still an active member but right now he’s being framed and fortunately both his alliances the MC and the other members of the Search and Rescue have his back.
Ian and Rory have had an awkward crush thing on each other for years now. The gun shop owner was raised by survivalist parents who tried to keep their family as off the grid as possible. Rory has no clue how to act in social situations, people are a puzzle and she always feels left out of the joke – but put a weapon in her hands and she becomes an expert in her element. She’s walking a dangerous line with her legitimate gun shop and a backroom for special transactions. It’s that backroom that will have her under Ian’s protection and in danger from his Club.
Ian has been walking a narrow road between two alliances for quite some time now. Neither one likes that he is a part of the other’s world, but no one is pushing him to take a side – yet. When Rory comes under attack from his MC, Ian has to make a decision – his brothers and that life or the woman he’s fallen hard for and would do anything to protect. It’s not a difficult decision at all, yet it places them both in even more danger.
The suspense is the stronger part of Romantic Suspense in Fan The Flames … not to say that there isn’t a slow simmer to a boiling point romance between Rory and Ian Yet the murder and the mystery and certainly the action fuel this story. While the romance isn’t second place, it flows more like a natural part of other events. Ian and Rory are a sizzling couple with Ian allowing the socially awkward Rory to take things at her own pace. He’ll do absolutely anything for this woman but most of all he’ll wait for the prize that he knows she certainly is in his life.
I adored Rory. Imagine being so off the grid that doing zombie drills is a natural part of your life. She doesn’t fit into the rest of the world but she’s comfortable with Ian. Some of their conversations had me in tears of laughter and also sadness. This is a couple that you will be rooting for to get their own unique happy ever after.
The mystery threads that were woven into the first story in the series continue to grow more entwined. I did not expect a resolution just yet, and wasn’t surprised to see things move toward the next story in the series. I need a wrap up of all story lines in a stand alone, solo novel (which Fan the Flames is definitely not) – in an ongoing series I expect the tensions to build and the suspense to last until the final story. Why have them connect if that isn’t going to happen – in my opinion.
If you love some suspense and mystery mixed in with your romance this series is perfect for you. And Fan the Flames adds some unique layers to the ongoing story line.
*I received an e-ARC of Fan The Flames from the publisher, Sourcebooks Casablanca and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. That does not change what I think of this novel.*
