In the remote Rocky Mountains, lives depend on the Search & Rescue brotherhood. But in a place this far off the map, trust is hard to come by and secrets can be murder…
As the captain of Field County’s ice rescue dive team, Callum Cook is driven to perfection. But when he meets new diver Louise “Lou” Sparks, all that hard-won order is obliterated in an instant. Lou is a hurricane. A walking disaster. And with her, he’s never felt more alive…even if keeping her safe may just kill him.
Lou’s new to the Rockies, intent on escaping her controlling ex, and she’s determined to make it on her own terms…no matter how tempting Callum may be. But when a routine training exercise unearths a body, Lou and Callum find themselves thrust into a deadly game of cat and mouse with a killer who will stop at nothing to silence Lou-and prove that not even her new Search and Rescue family can keep her safe forever.
Read on for my thoughts on Hold your Breath. No true spoilers, promise.
It seems that for this couple opposites truly do attract. Callum is a perfectionist, a person who has a place for everything and everything in it’s place, a bit of a neat freak and always in total control of himself and the current situation. Louise or Lou is a total hot mess. Nothing in it’s place, unless it’s the place it’s fallen. Finally free of a controlling family and an even worse ex-boyfriend, she is determined to be true to herself in all things. And if that means traveling across the country, taking a risk or two then so be it. She is free now and intends to stay that way.
As the newest member of the ice rescue team, Lou has a lot to learn and she may be learning it from the best, but that doesn’t mean that she’s immune to the attractive package that is Callum Cook. What she wouldn’t give to crack the ice that seems to surround him… but it’s safer to not be tempted by the man who sends off chilling waves in her direction and just focus on the training. During a training session, the last thing Lou expected to find in the icy waters was a dead body. Or to become the victim of a stalker or perhaps even someone worse.
Hold Your Breath is a chilling romantic suspense roller coaster ride that will keep you guessing and hold your attention until the final page. There are two mysteries within this story – Lou’s stalker, and another story arch that seems to be a thread that will continue throughout the series. I like those the best, more clues, deeper understanding of what is happening with each new release.
While this story is strong on the suspense and action happening to and around this couple, the building romance between Callum and Lou doesn’t take a total backseat – it’s more of a slowly developing burn. And I found that given the situation they found themselves in, that slowly building romance worked very well for me. In the real world nothing stops simply because you are falling in love – the bills need paid, the dishes done and the job you love has to go on in spite of your raging emotions. So, for me, I enjoyed the feeling of the mystery, the suspense taking the front edge of this story, while the romance developed more naturally on the side.
I enjoyed Hold Your Breath very much and would definitely recommend this story (and series) to any Romance reader who likes a bit of mystery and suspense surrounding their love stories.
*I received an e-ARC of Hold Your Breath from the publisher and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. That does not change what I think of this novel.*
